A few years before she passed away, Daehaeng Kun Sunim was visiting the youth group as they worked on lanterns and parade floats for Buddha’s Birthday, and as she looked over them, she told the abbess and her attendant, “Build a statue of me in this spot after I’m gone. The people coming to the temple now won’t really need it, but it will help those people who come after I’m gone.”
It was quite unexpected, but Kun Sunim wouldn’t say such a thing unless it was deeply important, so after much work and a number of construction challenges, the statue was unveiled on October 20, 2019.
