Who We Are

We’re a group of laypeople and ordained students of Daehaeng Kun Sunim, who work at living in accord with the truths taught by the Buddhas and all awakened beings.

  • See others as yourself.
  • Love others as yourself.
  • Know that you and they are all connected together, and function as one whole.
  • This connection is called many things – Buddha-nature, true self, god, the Father, the Mother, and so on.
  • It is within you, so have faith in it, and entrust it with everything that arises in your life, and everything you struggle with and are caught up in.
  • Go forward like this, entrusting and letting go, experimenting with this and paying attention. Keeping being aware and observing. Notice what happens from your experiments. Let go of even those and go forward again.

Hanmaum Seon Centers are part of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, and observe the traditional Mahayana precepts and temple organization.

Traditionally, Seon Centers are meditation halls, and while we do have sitting meditation sessions, the focus is on daily life and applying these principles to whatever is arising as we go about our daily life.

Daehaeng Kun Sunim wanted to teach spiritual practice in such a way that anyone could participate, regardless of their gender, age, or ordination status. She clearly saw that each and every one of us had the same inherent energy and the same potential to awaken to this and apply it to the world around us. So she focused on teaching in a way that anyone could participate.

I live in Aotearoa New Zealand. I have read two of Daehaeng Kun Sunim”s books: Wake Up and Laugh and Like Lions Learning to Roar. I found them gloriously inspiring. And I have a question: Is there a formal practice to follow like meditation or do I everyday informally remind myself to entrust/release my life and the day-to-day events/circumstances to Buddha-nature by saying something like “I entrust this X(event) to my Buddha-nature” and then observe what happens?
ThankyouandBless for any guidance you can give me.
